The Elements Of A Good Golf Swing Tempo
If you watch any great golfer you will see that whatever the speed of their swing is, they will remain balanced. Being able to link that balance with the rhythm of the swing you have all the ingredients of a great golf swing tempo.
The speed of the tempo is irrelevant, it can be slow or fast, but what matters is the consistency and the smoothness of it. Some take a metronome with them when they practice, whilst others go with whatever the latest gadget on the market is that has been designed to help. Now here is a sweeping statement, the problem with all golfers is that they swing the club too fast. They do this because they are using a bit of basic logic, the faster the club head is traveling when it hits the ball the further the ball will go. This is true and the reasoning is sound, but do you need to waste all that speed and power for the whole swing, well the answer is no.
So theoretically, knowing that you do not need to have reached full speed until impact with the ball, you could complete your back-swing very slowly. Then start your downswing equally slowly and then just before impact turn on the power. So thinking of what you need to achieve, hitting the golf ball as your club reaches the required speed, then you have about 99% of the swing to work on. Obviously you cannot just switch the power on at the end of your down-swing, there has to be a gradual acceleration. If the acceleration is hard, and not smooth, you will become unbalanced and accuracy will be lost as the club face comes into contact with the ball.
Done correctly, a good golf swing will appear effortless. You will notice that a top golf player will have his swing under control so that at the moment of impact they will have achieved the club speed that they wanted. There will not be a sign of over-swing as that would be a sign of wasted effort.
If you want to attain a smooth, controlled golf swing there is nothing better than going to your local driving range and just practicing over and over again hitting balls. At the start it does not really matter where the balls go as you are just trying to attain a good tempo. Once you have mastered that, then start to think about direction and distance.
