As anybody who’s played 18 holes of golf can attest, it can be one of the most satisfying, and the most irritating, sports activities to play. It seems so simple, right? Simply hit the ball straight, chip it on the green, then two putt and move on to the following hole. I wish it was that easy! Even if you begin the game well, your swing can easily collapse and leave you angry at your clubs, your technique, and the sport itself. So how can you learn to hit the ball better without many years of extra training?

Despite the fact that there’s no easy fix that will cure all of your golf difficulties, the following are a few secrets to improvement that you need to remember to ensure you perform up to your potential and keep your score as small as possible.

To start, try to keep your swing motion slow and controlled, whether you’re hitting it long or chipping. One of the main errors that beginners make is over hitting shots by swinging too fast or coming down too straight on the ball. What this does is to ruin the natural motion of your swing, leading to shanking or hooks, and usually not even obtaining the extra distance you’re aiming for. Just select the appropriate club and count on your normal swing motion, together with the energy you receive from rotating your hips in harmony with your swing, to lend you all the strength you need.

After that, be positive you’ve got the basics covered even before you swing. This means making sure you keep your gaze on the ball the entire time, and keeping your stance lined up to point straight at the cup. I don’t care how well you swing your club, if you aren’t lined up correctly, or if you pick your head up to observe where your ball ends up, the golf ball is going to travel way off target.

Lastly, and most importantly, remember to always stay calm and don’t let lousy shots go to your head. Believe me, I know exactly how easy it is to hit a few bad shots consecutively and start feeling mad and tense. It’s completely natural. But what this is likely to do is make it tougher to hit it properly, since your entire body will be tensed up. Try to keep in mind that each shot is an opportunity to hit it well, and to try to find a rhythm that is right for you, like a basketball player shooting free throws, and stick with it. Leave all of the lousy shots you’ve hit out of your thoughts, and visualize swinging perfectly and putting the shot exactly where you are aiming.

Even though there’s not a substitute for time and effort when attempting to get better at your golf swing, using these three tips can play an important role in playing more satisfying and better golf.
