Of course you are going to need to practice to improve, but the correct abilities that you have to practice have a tendency to change from one player to the next. As a general rule of thumb, there are three things that you should particularly focus on in order to get the finest golf game achievable. When hitting a golf ball you must contact the ball exactly in the center of the club head, so the first and fundamental skill you must concentrate on is ensuring that your golf swing is as it should be. The same fundamental rule applies to all golf shots and to get on top of your putting you must also hit the ball in the dead center of the club head. Unless you strike the ball dead on the center you can’t expect the ball to go straight and you will never be able to master your putting. It doesn’t matter how much you practice, it’s just not possible and will result in plenty of frustration over what you are doing wrong.
Before moving onto ensuring that you always hit the ball in a straight line to the target you ought to have worked hard to improve hitting the ball from the center of the club head. If your aim is towards a lake and you need to strike the ball a couple of feet away from you it wouldn’t be a good idea to hit the ball in the direction of a tree next to it. You might think this sounds a bit odd, but many casual golfers do not approach the ball squarely to the target. Then they are totally flabbergasted because they have not hit the target. Your putting skills could be seriously changed by being off square to the target by just a fraction and the ball will not go where you want it to go.
It’s important that you rehearse this point a lot, as most casual golfers don’t know when they are just a little off center from the target. The smallest amount of variation away from the target will normally result in a missed shot and an increased handicap. Putting skills don’t have to be rehearsed on a golf course as you could without difficulty rehearse this skill with a home putting green in the office or at home. Going to a golf driving range is not going to help advance your putting skills so while working on your putting skills stay away from them if possible.
Ensuring that you pick up the pace of the putter head when coming into contact with the ball is the last putting skill to rehearse to ensure that your putting abilities are getting better. The mistake that many casual golfers make is to slow the club head down before hitting the ball. Slowing the putter head down will mean you lose the momentum that’s needed for the ball to reach the target. Practice this skill and make a conscious attempt not to slow the putter down before contacting the ball will usually be enough to advance your putting and give you some enhanced results.
